Should You Be Using SMS Short Codes?

By Carlos Scarpero
11 Feb

Would you like to market super cheaply anytime you wanted and have ultra responsive customers? The technology is already here through text message marketing, or SMS short codes. Today you will learn more about these great little codes. Who knows, it could be your next low cost advertising vehicle.

First of all, here’s a definition of SMS short codes. After the Haiti earthquake, the Red Cross used SMS short codes that you could use to make donations by texting the word “haiti” to a special number. On some of the local tv stations, you might have noticed that you can send a text message and get restaurant coupons. Those are also SMS short codes.

There are a few ways to set up SMS short codes for your business. The easiest way is to go through a third party provider of SMS short codes. One of the biggest third party providers of SMS short code services is TextMarks.com. Textmarks.com clients all share the short code 41411. For example, Dayton City Schools, Dayton Racquet Club and the Ohio Department of Transportation could all register subscribers under the same short code phone number. The list is differentiated by the word that is texted to the short code phone number. The industry calls this the “keyword.”

Now that you have a basic understanding of what short codes are, should you be using them? It depends on what you sell and who you are selling it to. Right now, the texting market is dominated by users under age 30. If you are selling to college students or young adults, this certainly could be a very inexpensive way to get your message out there. If you are marketing to other demographics, you might want to wait a while until the market matures.

Amidst all this, the point to focus is the SEO company one might open doors for as their solution provider. It may be a cake walk to hire one in no time, but, definitely not when you must make sure the genuineness of the company which is a must.
